On 31st March, 1917, the 20th London battalion of 141 Brigade, 47th Division moved into the front line at Hill 60 in the Ypres salient where they remained until 5th April. At 4pm on 2nd April, the battalion HQ moved into nearby tunnels after the right side of the front line had been cleared in preparation for a bombardment by the British guns. The enemy’s guns retaliated causing five casualties and later that evening the patrols sent out by 20th London were heavily sniped.  At some stage during the day John Ling was killed.
